We're dancing around the fact that the majority of consumer camera sales were cheap point and shoots of all kinds. TLRs, zeiss folders and knockoffs, brownies, whatever kodak was outsourcing their name to, tons of long dead brands. Japan had little more than cheap leica and rollei knockoffs until Pentax came out with the first japanese SLR. The market wasn't nearly as monolithic as today and didn't begin to resemble its current form until the 80s.
