It will depend on how long the tube is and what focal length the lens is. Closer focus and shorter focal length on the zoom lens will give you the most magnification, but this reduces your working distance. You want long focal length and further focus setting + extension tubes. That will allow you to be several feet to 50 feet away and still get 1:1, depending highly on what type of telephoto lens you have and how long the tube is. There's a point of diminishing returns for extension tubes where Image Quality just gets worse and worse. Pic as example, but with a non-mirror lens you'd get far better IQ than this.
Auto-focus will most likely not even work correctly, but that will depend on the lens and camera types.
