You are most likely to get bit by a snake by just accidentally stepping near it while it's hiding and it mistakenly believes you have seen it and it is in danger. Watch for pit vipers at the base of logs and under rocks/crevices and always be mindful of your step. And of course don't pick up a snake if you don't know what it is/if its safe, but that should go without saying obviously. It also very much pays to know which snake in your area are venmous (if any) and which aren't. Pic related. These are the dangerous snakes of my region. If I didn't know how to spot these species, I would never pick up any wild snake.
