As for the more direct answer to the question, strict organization is your best friend. Rating, keywording and grouping photos regularly will net a good base from which it is possible to draw photos faster. Then, when there exists a smaller batch, it can be pruned and further organised as a complete work. A good tool for that is printing small samples and making a collage out of them.
