70-300 VRII problem

I hit a snag today with my Nikkor 70-300 VRII, there is now a sound of a ball-bearing rolling around inside,and it refuses in auto-focus to focus out to more than 30m.More worrying it now won't manual focus at all.
Anyone have any experience with this?
