that's why shooting with publications is the safest option. you tell them what shows you want to shoot, they send the requests, you shoot the shows.
not to say that the "hit up the band" approach is bad but you have to think that odds are there's someone hitting them up every tour date. but sometimes they don't care. sometimes they'll say yes to everyone because it costs them nothing and they might get a cool pic of themselves. depending on the size of the band.
I like shooting for publications but I'm sick of it. I can't do photo stories that way. sure, I can do shots of the line waiting to get in, venue filling up slowly, etc but you can't really tell much of a story unless you have access. at shows at least. festivals is easier
