This lense is flawlessly sharp, even wide open, close up or at distance, against the light or not.
Nikon didn't release a better 28mm until 2012, and even then it's only real benefits are the f1.8 aperture and autofocus. It is bigger, heavier, distorts more, isn't practically any sharper.
You do have to hold the older lense still and focus it yourself, but if you do that right you've got nothing to worry about.
