Actual telescopes take the best moon photos, on clear cold nights, away from light and atmospheric pollution and distortion.
It's not a very interesting component of photography until you have a serious telescope, and then it's not really interesting either.
image related: the last one I took. Slightly overexposed (correct as standard spot metered), no editing. Pentax 1000mm/11 lens, on a tripod. But if you can find the right immovable object to cradle your lens against comfortably smooshe din a rolled up towel or shooter's bean-bag, then a tripod is totally redundant and more annoying than anything.
