Your camera hangs FROM the strap. Gravity pulls down on the camera, and then the strap keeps it from falling down. So usually, the strap is taught around whatever body part you wrap the strap around, then the camera is at the bottom of that.
What the hell do you mean that they "smack into the sides of your camera"? Can you maybe draw me a diagram?
