I spent about 20 min shooting this fly on the weekend, increasingly getting frustrated over the lack of detail on the eye. Those of you who shoot macros of bees or ants will know that it is highly difficult to get some texture on the compound eyes. The former have large, incredible eyes with very high resolution ommatidia (i.e. eye cells), the latter rather small and basic ones. Flies should be easier to shoot because their eyes are large but the ommatidia are big, too.
Yet here I was trying with this minute fly, maybe 1.5-2 mm in length, and failing over and over again. I could get the camera to resolve the anatomic features down to the hairs but the eyes remained an undifferentiated mush
