They're landscape weapons, you have sort of limited dynamic range but it's still better than slide film.
They actually do mostly fine in most things that do not require a fast AF, except portraiture, for portraits the sensor leads to far too much skin detail to be comfortable imho.
On area where they shine is black and white, there's no better black and white camera really, and the noise issue is really limited in B&W, you can go to ISO 3200 easily even with a Merrill.
