On a D-SLR or mirrorless camera you can set it on a tripod and do long exposure. I typically do 8-10 second exposures using the self timer to continue firing, after setting up in a scene, and just waiting for the timing to be good. In order to eliminate the glow the flash has to occur about midway through the exposure. The lightning will basically burn itself into the frame (similar to how car lights stay "embedded" in long exposure photographs), but if it fires too early in the exposure it can look faded, and too much toward the end and it will look too blown out, like in your pics.
I've attached an image I shot a couple years ago, I think this is the kind of exposure you're going for? You don't need a high end camera to do it but you'll want at least a Rebel T6 or D3400 equivalent.
