Saul Leiter was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1923 and initially pursued a career as a painter before turning to photography. He moved to New York City in 1946, where he became part of the burgeoning art scene. Although he worked as a fashion photographer for much of his career, Leiter’s true passion lay in street photography. His work, largely unrecognized during his lifetime, has since earned him a reputation as a pioneer in color photography.
