I use full ass DSLRs since 2015 and I have never been hassled by just regular people in the street. The only times I've ever been given shit is when doing industrial and railroad pictures and it's the employees who don't like it (they are wrong - unless you're actually *on* their property, they can't control you taking photos).
I imagine regular people would give a shit if you were doing something *stupid*, like sitting on a park bench at the playground (where you have no children of your own) and taking pictures of other people's kids. Or using a huge telephoto lens to take creepshots of women from a long distance away, as if you were birdwatching. Just don't do shit like that. If you are so socially clueless as to not know how to be like.. that.. then you should stick to pictures of inanimate objects, human interaction is not your strong suit.
Worst case may give you a look like pic related, where they're clearing thinking "wtf is this joker with the camera, wish he'd go someplace else" but keep it to themselves.
