You're not experienced enough to reach the limits of the kit lens, you're just itching to buy gear because you think it's a shortcut to get better photos when real life experience will serve you more.
Don't bother buying a book, you probably won't bother to read it. Put the Canon into aperture priority mode and focus on that. It'll fall into place from there.
