But most likely, I'd have the light higher up and more towards the front of his face so it didn't cast such a big shadow from his nose. If I wanted the front half of his face in shadow, I'd angle the flash such that the whole side of his face is blocked from the light by the other side of his face instead of there being plenty of light on the parts of his face that aren't hidden behind his nose.
Pic related--Softboxed flash from camera-right so it still feels very directional, but the camera-left side of her face is all in shadow vs. the camera-right side (except a little bit on her eye--like I said, the true answer is that I'm not an expert with off-camera lighting myself either)
