Anyone can install gentoo (or arch, if you're not that bored) but it's far below the level of actually accomplishing something on an OS that already came installed and already works fine.
Likewise anyone can learn to try and fix colors in darktable, but that is just below the intellectual level of actually color grading a real ungraded log gamma instead of a plain ol' fucked raw file, and a far cry from actual editing (frequency separation, etc). You are spending your time trying to accomplish what your camera's jpeg engine already did better.
And it's not like DPP4 isn't free either. It's just not "free" as in "richard stallman, founder of the free software movement, has, on multiple occasions, expressed the belief that it should be legal to rape children and animals as long as they do not require medical attention afterwards".
