You can buy those older cameras on ebay and the Polaroid Originals film works just fine so long as it's made for the camera.
For instance you can't put an I-Type film pack in an old 600 camera because Polaroid used to insert the battery for the camera inside the film pack. I-Type film doesn't have this battery so the 600 camera won't even turn on if you try to use the new film.
Another cheap way to get an instant camera for Instax is to look for the Lomography Instant models. I picked up a Lomo Instant'Wide for £30 on ebay because nobody knows about them.
