Emotion is everything. Why is that picture masterful? Because it's emotional. It tells a story.
Also, I hate the whole 'well let's see your work' response. We're all learning and trying to get better. It's extremely hard to capture emotion, let alone create an interesting photo. I think we can criticize a photograph without necessarily being masters ourselves. If you just want to share your photos so people tell you that they're good, then stick to sharing them with your friends and family.
