the bayer pattern system actually derives the light valve of a pixel from a single photo site whether it is R G or B and derives the colour some understanding the value of surrounding photosite.
a sensor tho will need more photosites then final pixels tho to properly calculate the colour of pixels on the edges of the image.
for example the arri mini sensor has 3424 x 2202 photosites to create its final image of 3200 x 1800
