A copy stand would work much nicer than a tripod as you can set it up once in the exact position needed and never have to change it, where as your constantly setting up the tripod and spending some time adjusting each time you scan. If you can find a copy stand for under $50 I'd recommend picking one up, if not just use your tripod.
