I was visiting NY on vacation with my wife and her family, and I’d always been into trying to capture “good” shots with my phone. My brother in law had an olympus pen-f and I was really impressed with the pictures he got out of it. I’d had a couple of point&shoots before, but was never happy with the photos and didn’t educate myself on photography basics.
Anyways, my BIL photos were way better than my iPhone. We went to B&H, browsed the mirrorless cameras for a while and I ended up with an olympus em-10 II because it was small, not too expensive, and had a lot of features that sounded good like IBIS.
I’m still happy with it, have spent about $1000 on lenses and gear. Would I change what I bought? If I had a bigger budget I might have gone with a FF body or maybe an em-5 for a few hundred more. Either way, getting into photography has been a really fun creative outlet and I’m more than happy with what I got.
