Well first of all, if you optimise development for each, I doubt anybody will be able to tell you what's what. Grain, latitude, speed are virtually the same.
The reason I shoot it, is because in most developers it has a more linear curve than TriX, which makes it respond better to pushing and pulling, without giving cartoonish contrast in the midtones. Once I have full negs with detail across the range, I can easily choose what contrast I want for the print. In general, I prefer negatives that can print straight on grade 3-3.5 for normal contrast. I find relatively flat negatives, the easiest to print at *any* contrast, and to do techniques like split grade. Also, a relatively thick negative (not blown though) also makes it easier, since it gives more time for dodging and burning.
Lastly, HP5+ is about ⅓ less than the price of TriX, i.e. I can get 4 rolls of HP5+ instead of 3 of TriX for the same price.
