You're just a consumer. The people that matter are producers. The world doesn't actually need you. There are plenty of economic systems where you'd just receive rations and a mandatory labor assignment, and technological development would keep on chugging without your voluntary donations, but in every system that doesn't collapse the productive class is favored by the state because otherwise you can't have food, law enforcement, or national defense.
All you are is the guy who pays the most money for the least well tested equipment.
