You really have to master flash. External flash meter, spot everything, adjust flash as needed. If you aren't going to use flash, you're going to have to set up reflectors and bounce ambient light. You're usually dealing with very low or very high contrast and dynamic range and want some way to modify your shadows. Otherwise you'll be set up 3 inches from a window trying to be Rembrandt.
