All the 5D ever had over the 1D of equivalent generation was muh megapickles and even then it is not always true that the 5D had more of that. Both have and had cutting edge low light and dynamic range performance. It's plainly obvious that more resolution will hamper continuous framerates, and in a camera designed for press and sports use like the 1D series continuous framerates are more important than resolution because getting the perfectly timed shot is more important than it looking perfect. Press and sports cameras have always prioritized speed. The 5D is a professional/high end consumer DSLR for when image quality is all that matters, the 1D series is a professional DSLR for when the speed to get the shots matters more than the end result. Selling the perfectly timed image of ball just falling into the receiver's hands or bat just striking the game winning hit is far more important than being able to print the picture on a wall sized banner with perfect pixel-peeper fidelity.
