Your problem seems to be that you want a photo to tell you the time of day. This is not what photos are designed to do. Watches are meant for this task. Consider buying a watch instead.
The sky is, in fact, a terrible method of determining the time without knowing the specific latitude and longitude of the location. Evening light in Iceland is not the same as evening light in Flyoveristan.
