A big lens will more times than not frighten your subject away as the scream "professional." Smaller lenses make it seem like you're the local rere scrap booking his time in the local country and will more times than not encourage the locals to approach you to have their picture taken (and try and steal things from your kit while you're taking pictures) In either instance it should be something that you have acknowledged and made peace with the fact will end up broken once you eat shit (dont say you wont, literally everyone does.) Which is why its good to have a film point and shoot style compact backup (something metal framed like a rollei35)
If you're just looking for something for the next riot use a smartphone, you'll already have it on you anyway and chances are you will take just as good a photo with it as you would a dslr.
