which is good, but I rarely find myself wanting to use any lens that isnt f/2.8 these days.. also my version is noisy (screw drive AF), and the concept of calling it a macro is not entirely convincing.

It's very good. Sharp and quick to focus, has focus limiter to speed up 1m+ shooting focus seek times, and is easily useful at f/2.8
I haven't used mine a lot, but only becasue I made the mistake of buying another nice lens ( SMC Pentax FA 50mm F2.8 MACRO ) shortly after the 100mm.
I would categorise both of those lenses as keepers though, along with the others i posted about previously.
..even though I don't use the 50mm much now, and the 100mm even less, they are both outstanding macros that can also be put to general walkaround use.
