Could you guys give me some gear recommendations to get back in the game?
I had a Rebel XTi ten years ago, but it got stolen, and while I got its value back from the insurance company I was too much of a poorfag to warrant spending it on new gear. But now I finally have the money to spend, so I could even move upmarket a bit.
>usage
Pictures of my dog, and I enjoy going on road trips where there is nice scenery, so there's that. I'm also not ashamed to admit that I'm a bit of a gearfag, not as a fashion statement, but because it's a pleasure to handle well made equipment, and an annoyance to handle poorly made throwaway garbage.
>brand
I have no idea. I liked my Canon, but I don't have any EF lenses left, and I'm not married to the brand. IIRC I only picked it over an equivalent Nikon because it felt better in my hand.
>DSLR vs mirrorless
Back then I went DSLR because I didn't want a shitty camcorder viewfinder. But now I hear the resolution and responsiveness have dramatically improved, and you tend to get better autofocus, and you can preview the exposure as you take the pictures.
>crop vs full frame
I kind of want full frame for the e-peen, but I also don't want to be overly wasteful with my money. I'm not entirely sure what it means for image quality, with a given size grain film the bigger the better, but I'm not sure that principle holds. A side effect would be that lenses being more expensive at extreme focal lenghts, crop may be cheaper for tele use and full frame for wide angle use. I think my usage will be biased towards wide angle.
>budget
Body and first lens shouldn't cost more than $3,000
