If someone take a photograph of an apple and put it on the internet then it's the photograph of the apple and not an apple. Sure it's a representation of reality but it's a subjective representation. If no one can escape subjective representation then why should we be concerned about the so called authentic "reality"?

If you're asking someone to pose in a cartoon way or if you're interrupting them with your camera then it is also an aspect of manipulation. Also you don't know about William H. Mumler? He was one of the most famous photographers of 19th century and he used manipulation techniques.
Manipulation isn't just a process in the darkroom or in the shoop. Manipulation is when you take a photograph of someone on the street in whatever state he is at that time. Photographer manipulate his whole personality and people will see him for what he is in that photograph rather what he is really like in his normal daily life.
