http://www.thevfxco.co.uk/portfolio/george-michael-as/>Using 2 Milo motion control rigs the music video was built up of more than 9 sequences, each one containing more than 50 passes of “cloned” George Michael’s and Mary J Blige’s.They used a programmable "dolly" and then reshot the same sequence with different placements of the musicians.
This is the "dolly":
http://www.mrmoco.com/cranes-rigs/products/rigs/milo/I think the shots were layered using difference keying, starting from the furthest coming to closest. I guess that's how the production team got fast previews with multiple reshoots. This however can lead to problems if layers are not handled correctly or masking isn't employed. Pic related, a layer that is visibly further comes in front of a closer looking layer.
Otherwise I think rotoscoping was employed to key out figures coming behind and forward of other figures where difference key wasn't enough. That isn't very often. Greenscreen isn't mentioned. Body doubles aren't also.
It's all about the rig. You are not going to produce such a video successfully without it. You're limited to greenscreen, tracking markers and fixed speed motorized dolly. If you can't get the last one forget about it and go for static shots.
