Heat shimmer can kill wildlife photography. Some days I can't get anything other than vaseline shots even at close range and have to call it quits.Again, it all looks about right to me for a 300mm zoom. Just too far away. Wait until you shoot a sparrow or something at 5 feet, you'll see how good 300mm zoom can be.
