One thing I have noticed recently while upgrading and downgrading my lenses is that newer lens designs suck really. They're pretty sharp wide open but stopped down don't really improve that much.
I've owned all of the Nikkon AF 50mm lenses. The 1.4 and 1.8 afs are "great" wide open BUT the old pre d af vesion is tack sharp stopped down to f5.6, the newer lenses are... meh.
I too got a macro lens recently and it's my sharpest lens. An old 105mm f2.8 af (pre d) Nikkor micro. Pic related is just a test shot I did when I first got it (not very good).
The quest for sharpness/quality is good, however it seems that modern designers opt for good enough wide open quality with electronic wizardry to sell products. Image quality takes a back seat.
If you want to try disapointment regarding resolution and kit try deep sky imaging, lol. In most cases it'd be cheaper to move house than buy more kit.
