Instead of being dead center in the DOF you are pushed forward/backward until the front edge of the DOF is right near the plane of the subject you want in focus. The DOF is sharpest right in the center. I usually "wobble" back and forth (for close shots) or manually move the focus of the lens fowrds/backwards to find the DOF zone visually them move it dead center.I often find problems with this when opportunity arrives to fine tune it. What do you centre that sweet spot on? Eye, beak, top of head, some feathers? I think some autism starts kicking in for me at that point, and I start double guessing myself...
