A big part of the "wow" effect of the subway stuff is proper white balance, nuances in post-processing to generally push the image into brightness but also have good shadows (like architects do their catalog images), and what the cameras do at high ISO or long exposures. Subway stations here often do have bright light with even temperature - so that's an advantage. And admittedly, Munich's subway stations are a feast for the eyes, clean or not. The pictures here really only depended on the wide angle.
