The Vauthier markers are a series of matching sculptures that signify the location of the front line of the Western front as of July 1918, considered the turning point in the war for Allied command. Of the original 120 sculptures placed between 1921 and 1927, 97 remain, in various states of disrepair. Less than 10 have been restored to their original glory. While more well known during the height of the bicycle touring fad, these monuments have fallen into relative obscurity compared to other monuments commemorating the Great War, and are often found hidden in shrubbery or at odd angles. Many stand without fanfare or explanation, and with their embellishments slowly being erased by time, soon these markers will be nothing more than rounded stone.
