I got the 8-element version just to be a snowflake. Two other things to keep track of is that the rear element bulges out of the metal frame, contrary to newer versions, and that the auto-manual switch has the labels A-M instead of "auto-manual".
Great lens all around, but earlier version indeed loses a bit of contrast and is more susceptible to flare. Snapshit related.
Finally, the "Super Multi Coated" version has thoriated glass, which is radioactive. The other versions do not.
