>>2677092>leaning towards the GR because it seems to have the best price vs performance/IQ ratio of the bunchit does
>Is dust really THAT big of a deal with the GR?it is
i too was skeptical. there's enough posts everywhere saying "oh, but that's just a few scattered anecdotal accounts on the net! I'VE not had any problems [yet]" etc.
but then a cursory search on the net brings up the same thing over and over, by many, many posters in many places - so many in fact that it can't be just the concerted effort of a few dedicated detractors
there's just too many accounts out there to dismiss the dust issue as "just a few bad units".
all compacts with a telescoping lens system will get dust eventually, but some have better sealing than others and it would appear that the gr is just shoddy in that regard
there's one tutorial online where a guy, not willing to pay the lens cleaning charge (like a quarter of the price of a new one) disassembled his gr to clean the dust
in his opinion whilst looking at it, the sealing gasket thing is badly formed and badly installed
he opens his up every 3 months now.
apparently this has been a ricoh issue for some time, but the popularity of this 5th digital model has lead to more people encountering it
it's not a question of if, it's a question of when
earliest i've read is 3 days
latest, perhaps a year or at least 6 months
if it's not bad (yet) you'd only notice it the way anyone notices dust: at small apertures.
when worse you'll just waste more time in post cleaning up stuff that should not be there
it would be the perfect camera, but it is hampered by a very well documented manufacturing fault, and it is a fault
bad qc tolerances
poorly designed sealing
here's another anecdote for you: model i tried in store had dust out of the box so I noped the fuck out
i still want one, but am weighing up the hassle of self cleaning it every few months
dunno if can be fucked
but i want one
fucking ricoh get your shit together
