I use the USB port in the camera so that I'm not constantly exposing the sdcard and it's bay to potential contaminants and wear/corrosion of the contacts... actually mostly becase it's more convenient, and USB3 socket design is a little more robust than previous ones.
If I ever manage to 'break' my usb socket I'll still be able to use the sdcard in a reader. That doesnt necessarily work the other way around though.
