Went to my first ever anime con this March. I've been taking pictures for like half a year as a hobby at that point.
Took my Sony A7C with 85mm F/1.8. The con lasted 3 days, first day I just walked around to scout the place and get into the mood, didn't take any pictures as I was overwhelmed with the amount of people there and I felt strange coming up to people asking them for photos.
Second day, I said fuck it, in the morning walked to the first cosplayer asked, if she wouldn't mind having her pictures taken and that started it all, been there for 9 hours+, took a lot of pics, spoke with a lot of people. It was a very nice learning experience for me.
Protip: it's a good thing, if you know what the fuck their character is, so you can ask them for specific poses or shit, I didn't know that, but I had waboo friend with me helping me around.
