In the digital age, sensors are constantly advancing, and feature sets across different brands can vary wildly. For example, Olympus puts advanced IS in the bodies, where as Canon and Nikon only put basic IS in select lenses. On Nikon, Sony, Olympus, and Panasonic cameras (other brands too, by no means an exhaustive list), you can push the exposure quite a bit. On Canon cameras, you can't, or you end up with terrible banding and noise.
So yes, body choice is more important than ever, as the device that captures the image is no longer a simple door flap away, but instead, an entire $1000+ purchase away. And if you are going to invest that kind of money, you may as well get a body with good features, instead of something that hails back to the end of the film era but has a dated digital sensor thrown in instead.
