Point is that performance of optics in IR sets a limit (with decent enough camera).
If I were going to mod another camera for IR, I'd pick an old EOS-M because lenses I have. You probably could get far with anything which takes or adapts your lenses.
Someone has to try a lens to see if it has a IR hot spot problem. Try some goohgling.
