I still use 70-300 all the time, to the point that the grip has come off like a sock... it's funny how many times an Anon will say "I wish I had your gear" assuming I'm always using a big prime. Even in challenging conditions, the difference between a decent consumer lens and pro lens is marginal. People just need to stop cropping the shit out of shots and try getting closer instead. This 70-300 looks great within 10 feet, easily isolating the subject.
Weather isn't an issue either, just use a plastic bag. I use one no matter what the gear. Slide it over the whole setup, rip a hole for the front element, stretch it to fit, and secure it with the hood. It will be loose enough to use all your buttons and rings no problem.
