Overexposing just compounds the problem and makes them more faded. The bigger issue with expired slide film is colour shifts which happens much more readily than it does with expired C41 films. For this reason I wouldn't recommend with fucking with any expired E6 film unless you can guarantee it's been frozen.
If any film has been frozen for its lifetime, it should shoot fine. I have a huge stash of frozen Velvia 50 that expired in 1991 that shoots perfectly. Pic related.
