Unfortunately I don't have any other DSRLs to make a comparison with (aside from a 30d). God knows I wouldn't want to do this with the GR1d.
In any case, I think folks underestimate their body's abilities. Modern sensors are remarkably capable. Here's another image recovered in the same way.
