After setting up a tripod, a detailed scene, and a remote release to find the exact f/ sweet spot of a lens, I've come to the personal conclusion that outside of masturbating to MTF charts and side-by-side 800% crops, it genuinely doesn't matter as long as you're not shooting f/22 or something, and is completely overshadowed by inherent lens sharpness (or lack thereof), copy variation, decentering, heat haze, atmospheric variation, the color shorts you're wearing, etc.
