This isn't really something you have fullest control over, sometimes the interesting subject just doesn't stand in the ray of light and you can't do anything about it. That's the reasons you might prefer to shoot in less harsh light. In picture with the coach the light puts the focus on the woman in front and the background. I think neither of these things are what you wanted the attention on. You probably also didn't want the passenger, horses and second coachman to be obscured. You probably didn't think the brick wall in the background needed to be highlighted. You probably also wanted dynamic and guiding lines. The framing is still pretty awful without the light and shadow, but it's not helping. And when I say framing I don't just mean the exact crop. This might have never turned out to be a nice picture because you were simply in the wrong spot pointing your camera at the wrong thing.
