I was always wondering how weston and other old school macro photographers achieved seemingly impossible levels of DoF when shooting at 1:1 magnifications or higher. I read somewhere that some of Weston's exposures were in 5+ hour range because he used extremely small apertures + slow film, and using a custom waterhouse stop to get f96 or higher is the only way I can think of to get those small apertures. Most LF lenses only go to f64. Process lenses like the rodenstock Apo Ronar go higher if you wanted an easier/more modern option.
I'm very interested to see just how soft the images will come out from the high levels of diffraction. Softness is not really defeating the purpose of shooting 8x10 if done correctly imo. Apparently these rapid rectilinear lenses are also quite sharp in the center and the one I got is oversized for 8x10. We shall see in a couple weeks...
