I had a friend that worked for a small fashion label. So i waited until an assistant job opened up.
While I waited I did one small photo shoot a week with my friends equipment. From product photography to models. One strobe and a old 7D. I was able to make a pretty decent portfolio. Here is one of those photos.
The spot opened and I was lucky enough to have them take a chance on me. I knew very little about photography. I just tried different things until something looked good.
I learned inside the studio assisting the other photographers. I think most professionals learn this way.
Photography is pretty easy to learn. The talent is in composition...so don't get to bogged down about equipment. It's the least important thing...I promise you.
